Visitor Center Naturalists
Visitor Center Naturalists interpret local flora and fauna for visitors, give advice on exploring Mitchell Lake and surrounding natural areas, manage Visitor Center operations, and share their knowledge of conservation and Audubon's mission with the public. Other activities such as research, data entry, and administrative help may occasionally be requested of Visitor Center Naturalists when they are not interpreting.
Education Docents
Education Docents assist with facilitation of scheduled group programs for school children. School Group Programs are age-specific (K-12) and meet state education standards. The programs are held on weekday mornings. Training is provided, and this program requires dependable individuals who can make a time commitment and enjoy working with and teaching children.
Habitat Leaders and Clean-up
Garden and Trail Volunteers are needed to keep our native gardens and trail systems maintained. Tasks vary and may include weeding, mulching, pruning, and planting. The work will vary seasonally, and individuals or groups are welcome.
Community Science Volunteers
Community Science Volunteers support Mitchell Lake and the broader conservation community by performing scientific fieldwork. Current projects include Monarch Watch, Frogwatch, nest box monitoring, and biological surveys. Community Scientists usually work in small teams while collecting habitat data. Training provided, enthusiasm required.
Special Event Volunteers
Special Event Volunteers can become involved in a variety of ways, from assisting staff at our family programs to helping with Migratory Bird Fest. These volunteers are contacted as events are scheduled, and could be called to help on evenings and weekends.
Outreach Volunteers
Outreach Volunteers are Mitchell Lake's ambassadors in the San Antonio community. They attend popular gardening and conservation events to speak with the people about our mission of conservation, distribute literature, and recruit more volunteers. Volunteers with advanced training in wildscaping and/or water conservation techniques are encouraged to lead specialized outreach presentations to educate the public.
